What is skin?

Skin is the largest organ of our body with a total area of 20 square feet! Skin is made up of 3 layers:

  • The epidermis:It is the outer most layer of our skin made up of connective tissues. It acts as a barrier (literally!) between atmosphere and the body. It is water proof and decides our skin tone.
  • The dermis:It is beneath the epidermis and comprises of connective tissues, sweat glands and hair follicles.
  • The hypodermis: It is the deepest layer which comprises of connective tissues and fat layer.

Skin tells a lot about your health. Pale or patchy skin is an indication of bad health and one must get a check up to know the cause of paleness and patches. Skin appears rosy and full of oxygen if you have healthy heart and lungs. This is because your skin gets full supply of oxygen by lungs and you have numerous blood vessels in there. If you’re suffering from any disease related to heart and lungs or if you are a smoker, your skin would appear less rosy due to less blood vessels in there. Gold colored skin is considered healthy as this color appears due to carotenoids present in fruits and vegetables.

Do we treat only epidermis?

No, it’s not that superficial! Upper most layer of skin indicates how healthy the skin is. It shows how much well our dermis and hypodermis is. But it’s not the only layer which we treat.

So, basically whatever we apply on our skin (the epidermis), it penetrates deep down till our hypodermis through small pores. It means our skin will be healthy if all the three layers are well taken care of!

What decides texture of the skin?

Texture basically means what our skin looks like. All the three layers decide the texture of skin. Skin is said to be smooth, silky, well hydrated and glowing if:

  • Epidermis has very fine pores and can hold water molecules well. Epidermis should have no bumps, marks etc.
  • Dermis has normal sized sweat glands (sebaceous glands). This will make skin look smooth i.e. neither too dry nor too oily.
  • Hypodermis contains blood capillaries. So, blood should have optimum values of components in it for a healthy and glowing skin.

What decides type of the skin?

Skin can be normal (combination), dry or oily. Actually dermis and epidermis decide whether the skin would look normal, dry or oily. The type of skin also depends on one’s health, eating habits and environment.

  • An oily skin has ‘over active’ sweat glands in dermis and has large pores in epidermis. Oily skin is acne prone and is shiny.
  • A dry skin has small pores in epidermis. Wrinkles appear on dry skin because it is not well hydrated (the pores cannot hold water molecules properly)

A combination skin has normal sized pores and can hold water molecules well. Sweat glands are not too active. Hence, combination skin has no pimples and wrinkles do not appear easily. It doesn’t seem to be too dry or too oily (shiny)

How to determine the skin tone?

Skin can be neutral, cool tones or warm toned. Hold your arm in sun light and observe weather the veins appear or not and what is the color of those veins.

  • If you cannot tell whether your veins are bluish or greenish in color then you have a neutral skin tone.
  • If the veins appear greenish then you have warm skin tone.
  • If your veins appear bluish then you have cool skin tone.

So what’s well treated skin?

A well-treated skin is healthy from inside out. We must make sure that whatever we are applying on our skin is working inside out to give us a well-nourished, literally healthy skin. The function of skin is to protect all the inner organs of a living thing. So, one must take care of this shield so that it can effectively act as a shield for the whole body!
