The Global agricultural revolution is the need of the time to save the planet!
We face at the most 11 million premature deaths which are avoidable if we change our eating habits, slash food waste, and change the way we produce food.

Recent studies have shown that we humans should change our eating habits in order to save the earth. So, does it means that earth is deteriorating because of the food we eat? Yes, that is true!
Unfortunately, agriculture has ruined almost half of the planet’s surface. Also, agriculture is using 70% of the global fresh water supply. This is contributing to the greatest emitter of greenhouse gases, the cause of algae blooms, and biodiversity loss. This will ultimately transform the earth’s surface.

“To have any chance of feeding 10 billion people in 2050 within planetary boundaries we must adopt a healthy diet, slash food waste, and invest in technologies that reduce environmental impacts. It is doable but it will take nothing less than global agricultural revolution,” said coauthor Johan Rockstrom, Director of Potsdam institute climate change impact research.

According to the recent studies, humans should consume half of the red meat and sugar as compared to the current intake and double the amount of vegetables, fruits, and nuts in their diet. This is a dramatic shift in the global diet and needs to be done on urgent basis to avoid the increased rates of obesity, heart diseases, and diabetes. These diseases are affecting nearly two billion people each year due to unhealthy eating habits.

So, let’s look into what is this global agricultural revolution and how we can implement it? It is estimated that by 2050, the world’s population will reach 10 billion. To feed the hungry ones, we need some ‘great food transformations’.

There are five key strategies which can be done to set some food norms. These include:

A Shift towards a healthy diet:

There should be a national and international commitment to transit towards more veggies, fruits, nuts, and less meat and sugar. This should be a norm all around the world. Serious steps should be taken to implement it. For example, it should be checked that restaurants are offering more green and fresh food in order to encourage people to have it.

Reorient the agricultural priorities:

The agriculture should be done not to have high quantities of foods but high quality food. Agricultural habits that includes the goodness of not only humans but the environment should be encouraged. The land should be used wisely to produce some healthy food which does not pose any threat to humans and the environment including other species.

Biodiversity conservation:

There should be proper planning and coordinated governance of land and oceans to preserve the bio diversity. This should be the priority. The agricultural land and food waste should not pose a danger towards other creatures.

Food losses and waste:

We should almost halve the food loss and waste during both food consumption and food production. This will lead to a clean environment with less waste and more (and healthy) to eat. This food waste also is a danger towards biodiversity. So, it should be avoided on a mass scale all around the world.

The ideal diet to save the earth and yourself:
To accommodate 10 billion people by 2050 and provide them food sustainably, you need to bring some changes in your daily diet. You should consider following diet plan for year 2019:

Vegetables and fruits:

You should double the total intake of veggies and fruits. You should consume 300g of vegetables (including 30g of starchy vegetable) and 200g of fresh fruit each day.

Meat intake:

The quantity of red meat should be halved that you take now. Precisely you should take 14g of red meat and 57g of white meat (fish and poultry).

Nuts:

Add nuts to your daily meals. You should take 50g of nuts each day.

Diary intake:

You should take 250g of dairy each day that includes milk, butter, yogurt, and cheese.

Lentils and beans:

You should take 50g of lentils and beans each day.

Miscellaneous:

Just take 31g of added sugar and 6g of oil per day. Oil should be vegetable oil.

Dr. Walter Willett of Harvard University explained this healthy diet plan, “to be healthy, diets must have an appropriate calorie intake and consist of a variety of plant-based foods, low amounts of animal-based foods, unsaturated rather than saturated fats, and few refined grains, highly processed foods, and added sugars.”

Bottom line:

There should be a revolutionary change towards a healthy eating and lifestyle in order to save the planet and help feed 10 billion people by 2050. It is important to change the agricultural method and save biodiversity as well.
